Playing songs
The Play tab says it needs Apple Music
The song game streams real records, so it needs an active Apple Music subscription on your device — the app can't supply the music itself. Learn and Kit work fully without one; they're built on synthesised tone.
I have Apple Music but it still won't play
Open Settings on your device, find Name That Key, and check that Media & Apple Music access is on. If Screen Time restricts explicit content, some tracks won't resolve — that's Apple's filter, not the app.
Building a set takes a while
Each song is looked up in the Apple Music catalogue as the set builds, which takes a few seconds. Fewer genres, or fewer rounds per set in Settings, makes it quicker.
I think a key is wrong
Tell me which song. Keys belong to the recording rather than the sheet music, so down-tuned guitars, sped-up tape, and period-instrument tunings all move the answer — but plenty of genuine mistakes exist too, and they get fixed.
Membership
What does it cover?
The Kit: song keys, tune by ear, metronome, circle of fifths, and the chord player. $12.99 a year, with the first week free. The song game and the whole Learn path stay free.
I paid and the Kit is still locked
Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account that bought it.
How do I cancel?
Cancelling is handled by Apple, not by the app: manage your subscriptions, or on your device open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancel before the free week ends and you won't be charged.
The tuner
Check me isn't hearing anything
It needs microphone permission — device Settings, then Name That Key, then Microphone. Playing closer to the phone helps, and so does a quiet room; the app listens for a steady sustained note rather than a strum.
Why is there no needle?
On purpose. A needle you can watch the whole time is a meter you tune with your eyes, which replaces the skill the app is trying to build. Tune by ear against the held pitch first, then check yourself.
